Weightlifting

QUESTION: I have been lifting weights for several years and now have pain in my shoulder when I try to bench press heavy weights. What is this?

ANSWER: Most likely, this is a problem involving the AC joint in the shoulder.  This is where the collarbone attaches to the acromion or the upper part of the shoulder blade.  It is a joint very commonly injured in contact sports but is also injured in patients who have done a great deal of weightlifting.  Bench press, dips, and overhead presses place a great deal of stress on this joint, and many repetitions over many years can cause an arthritic condition called osteolysis, even at a fairly young age. Initially, this is treated with ice, rest, and modification of lifting activities.  If the problem persists, however, you should see a physician.  Physical therapy, injections, and sometimes surgery are required to allow patients to return to their previous level of function.
