Plantar Fasciitis

QUESTION: I have heel pain with running. Could I have plantar fasciitis?

ANSWER:  Plantar fasciitis is one of the conditions that can cause heel pain. It is characterized by pain under the heel and slightly to the inside of the heel. The pain is more severe in the morning with the first steps and can be intensified by athletic activity, especially running and jumping. Most individuals respond well to treatment consisting of stretching exercises, anti-inflammatory medication, and heel pads. Injections of cortisone and night splints may be necessary, and surgery may be indicated in those cases that do not respond to non-surgical treatment.

Plantar fasciitis can be prevented in the athlete by shoes with a heel counter and energy-absorbing cushions in the heel, early recognition and treatment, stretching exercises, and slow, gradual build-up of activity.
