Arthritis

QUESTION: What kind of physical activity can I participate in if I have arthritis in my knee?

ANSWER: The most common form of arthritis affecting the knee is osteoarthritis (degenerative joint disease), as opposed to the more crippling type of arthritis, such as rheumatoid arthritis. Arthritic individuals should warm up very slowly and increase activity within the limits of comfort. Always maintain your present range of motion and increase motion if comfortable. Water sports, such as swimming, water aerobics, and walking in the water, as well as other low impact types of activities, such as walking, stationary cycling, and gentle strengthening may be tolerated in the individual with arthritis. Always maintain good weight control to preserve joint structure. If you have questions or concerns prior to participation in a specific physical activity, you should always check with your physician first.
