Achilles Tendon

QUESTION:  I do a lot of running, and I have developed pain above my heel and behind my ankle. How do I know if I have Achilles tendinitis?

ANSWER:  Achilles tendon problems are common in runners with a reported incidence of six percent to eighteen percent. Causes include aging, poor training techniques, and abnormal hindfoot biomechanics.

Most patients present with the gradual onset of pain, swelling and warmth just behind the ankle, over the Achilles tendon, and just above the heel. Symptoms usually occur after strenuous exercise. Most cases can be treated with rest, heat, stretching exercises and anti-inflammatory medication. Heel lifts can also be helpful. Activity with training modifications may usually be continued. Consult your physician if symptoms persist or worsen.
